Clean Energy launching the Zero Now Financing program with $100 million in credit support

Clean Energy Fuels Corp. has introduced a new program that is designed to make the cost of leasing or purchasing a new natural gas heavy-duty truck equal to or less than the price of the same truck with a diesel engine.

Clean Energy is launching the Zero Now Financing program with $100 million in credit support from its new strategic partner, oil and gas supermajor Total S.A., to cover the incremental portion of the truck value. Also, Clean Energy is partnering with multiple financial institutions.

The new natural gas trucks will take to highways equipped with a Cummins Westport ISX12N engine that has been certified by California Air Resources Board and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) at 0.02 g-NOx/bhp-hr and tested at 0.01 g-NOx/bhp-hr, which is at least 90% lower NOx emissions than current EPA NOx standards, according to Clean Energy.

The program extends to trucks (built by a variety of manufacturers) operating on either compressed natural gas or liquified natural gas and equipped with the new CWI ISX 12N engine. The Zero Now Financing offer will include a five-year engine coverage option on the Cummins Westport ISX12.

In addition, trucks financed or purchased through the program will be able to purchase natural gas fuel at a fixed price significantly discounted to diesel for the term of the financing/lease through a unique hedging program.

“The Zero Now Financing program levels the financial playing field by removing the price differential of a natural gas truck versus a diesel truck. This combination will give fleets a considerable sustainability advantage, which could result in winning more business,” comments Andrew J. Littlefair, president and CEO of Clean Energy. “The goal is to significantly reduce the environmental impact of heavy-duty trucking and widen the adoption of natural gas as a clean, American-made fuel to move America’s goods around the country.”

Clean Energy already makes its Redeem renewable natural gas available at many of its public stations and will work with fleets to provide it wherever possible. Redeem allows customers to achieve a reduction in greenhouse-gas emissions by at least 70% versus diesel, the company claims.

Clean Energy operates a fueling network of over 100 public stations strategically located around the U.S. and Canada that accommodate Class 8 tractors. The company plans to add more to meet demand.

US Foods Driving Cleaner Air in Houston

US Foods has been running Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Trucks in San Antonio and Austin. On May 10th US Foods added CNG trucks to their Houston warehouse. The new trucks are fueling at Freedom CNG’s North Houston station, which is located within the new Pinto Business Park at I-45 & Beltway 8. The area primarily contains industrial warehouses. Many in the food, beverage, and other distribution industries have built new facilities in the area.

With the nationwide push for companies to become greener “US Foods continues to make improvements across the company to reduce our environmental footprint and allow us to serve our customers in an energy efficient way,” said Dario Skocir, Vice President of Transportation. Furthermore, “Increasing the number of CNG vehicles in our fleet allows us to continue to reduce our annual fuel costs while reducing the amount of emissions emitted during our daily deliveries to customers.”

US Foods currently is the only food company in Houston running CNG fleet. “Our Texas fleet of 50 CNG units operating in place of similar diesel fuel tractors is estimated to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by 70 tons,” explained Sara Mathieu, director of media relations at US Foods.

“Since day one, we have been excited about our Pinto Business Park location,” said Bill Winters, Co-Manager of Freedom CNG. Currently, Houston METRO fuels 50 CNG Transit buses at the facility daily. METRO has 20 additional CNG buses on order and will deploy them in the last quarter of 2018. CNG trucks are a proven technology; lowering fuel costs, reducing emissions and improving air quality. “The fuel price at Freedom CNG has never changed since we opened our first station in 2012. Natural gas is a stable, clean, effective and economical transportation fuel choice.” Said Bill Winters.

US Foods is a national corporation committed to reducing the effects of harmful emissions that affect the ozone and the air we breathe. Freedom CNG is committed to providing education in the form of workshops, and grants in-order to upgrade the fleet equipment and stay on the leading edge of the clean energy movement in trucking.

Food Delivery Company Adopting 600 Propane Autogas Trucks

Schwan’s Home Service Inc., a nationwide food delivery company, is planning to deploy 600 propane autogas delivery trucks by year’s end.

The company is deploying 200 ROUSH CleanTech-powered Ford E-450 cutaways this month and plans to lease an additional 400 units by the end of 2018. Each frozen-food delivery truck is equipped with a Ford 6.8L V10 engine and a ROUSH CleanTech propane autogas fuel system.

“Propane-powered vehicles have played a key role in Schwan’s product delivery for more than 40 years,” says Danielle Stariha, senior manager of fleet and procurement for Schwan’s Home Service. “Total costs of ownership for propane autogas is much lower than traditional fuels and other alternative technologies, which is why we are continually implementing the newest propane technology.”

“Schwan’s long-time investment in propane autogas is a testament to the staying power of this economical and domestically produced transportation fuel,” adds Todd Mouw, president of ROUSH CleanTech. “And we are bringing Schwan’s the cleanest-operating propane technology on the market.”

According to ROUSH CleanTech, each Ford E-450 propane autogas truck emits about 91,000 fewer pounds of carbon dioxide emissions over its lifetime than a gasoline-powered vehicle. Propane autogas can also reduce greenhouse gases by up to 25%, carbon monoxide by up to 60% and nitrogen oxide by 20% compared to gasoline, the company adds.

“Propane-powered vehicles are much quieter than equivalent diesel-powered vehicles, which leads to higher driver satisfaction,” notes Ron Moore, vice president of warehouse and fleet operations for Schwan’s Home Service. “We deliver across the U.S. in various climates, conditions and terrains, and our drivers are excited about the ROUSH CleanTech-powered E-450 chassis.”

Anheuser-Busch Orders 800 Hydrogen-Electric Semi-Trucks

Anheuser-Busch has placed an order with Nikola Motor Co. for up to 800 hydrogen-electric semi-trucks.

The zero-emission trucks are expected to be integrated into Anheuser-Busch’s dedicated fleet beginning in 2020. The vehicles will be able to travel between 500 and 1,200 miles and be refilled within 20 minutes, reducing idle time.

Anheuser-Busch aims to convert its entire long-haul dedicated fleet to renewable-powered trucks by 2025. Nikola’s technology will enable the brewer to achieve this milestone across its long-haul loads while also helping to improve road safety through the trucks’ advanced surround viewing system.

“At Anheuser-Busch, we’re continuously searching for ways to improve sustainability across our entire value chain and drive our industry forward,” comments Michel Doukeris, CEO of Anheuser-Busch. “The transport industry is one that is ripe for innovative solutions, and Nikola is leading the way with hydrogen-electric, zero-emission capabilities. We are very excited by the possibilities our partnership with them can offer.”

“Hydrogen-electric technology is the future of logistics, and we’re proud to be leading the way,” adds Trevor Milton, CEO of Nikola Motor Co. “Anheuser-Busch has a long history of investing in progressive, sustainable technology, and we are excited to partner with them to bring the largest hydrogen network in the world to the USA. By 2028, we anticipate having over 700 hydrogen stations across the USA and Canada.”

The partnership with Nikola will contribute to Anheuser-Busch’s 2025 sustainability goals, which include reducing CO2 emissions by 25% across its value chain. The carbon reductions gained from these 800 trucks will reduce the brewer’s carbon emissions from logistics by more than 18%, the company estimates.
