Join us at the Lightning on Wheels Electric Vehicle Panel on Thursday September 14th

During the event, you will get to experience exactly how Tesla has redefined vehicle engineering. A Tesla Specialist will also show you how easy they are to charge, how safe they are to drive, and how electric vehicles can fit seamlessly into your lifestyle.

You’ll also get a chance to listen to Chevy weigh in on the electric vehicle vs. gasoline vs. hybrid debate, talk about how you can buy and maintain your very own electric vehicle, and the future of sustainable travel around the world!

Parking tickets are $12. There will be food provided.

PANELISTS:

Daniel Cohan, associate professor of environmental engineering at Rice University. His research focuses on air pollution modeling and the impacts of energy on the environment. He writes columns for The Hill and The Conversation, including topics related to electric vehicles and clean energy.

Stephen Pace, who is the President of the Tesla Club of Greater Houston and a member of the Houston Electric Automobile Association. He’s been driving electric since Oct 2012 and doesn’t miss stopping at the gas station. He currently owns a Signature Model S #219 which was one of the first in Houston.

First Come, First Serve for Enhanced Natural Gas Vehicle Grants

The revised Texas Natural Gas Vehicle Grant Program will cover up to 90 percent of the actual cost of the vehicle replacement. This is a dramatic increase from the previous program, which covered 90 percent of the incremental cost.
Expected to launch early to mid-2018, the program will fund replacement of vehicles over 8,500 GVWR and will include CNG, LNG and propane. Staff at the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality intends to provide pre-determined grant amounts in tables similar to the Rebate Grants program, so that applicants can look those up and determine what grant amount they would be eligible for.
NOTE: The program is NOT competitive on a cost/ ton basis, but rather first-come, first-serve until the $7,736,987 annual appropriation is committed.

ROUCH CleanTech Bluebird School Buses

H-GAC’s Houston-Clean Cities Coalition members, including representatives from Klein and Spring ISDs and H-GAC’s Clean Vehicles recently heard a presentation on the newly developed ROUSH CleanTech propane autogas engine available in class 4-7 vehicles and Blue Bird Type C buses certified to the optional low nitrogen oxide (NOx) level .05 g/bhp-hr. These new certified propane engines are 75 percent cleaner than the current emissions standard. ROUSH CleanTech said it has begun installing the new low NOx engines in Ford commercial vehicles and Blue Bird Vision propane school buses with model year 2017 engines.

Recent research has shown that diesel not only performs significantly worse than alternative fuels, it has also caused greater mechanical issues in school buses that use them. Houston-Clean Cities is encouraging ISDs to consider the use of alternative fuel engines for lower NOx emissions and lower maintenance costs.

Join the California Natural Gas Vehicle Coalition and the Coalition for Renewable Natural Gas for a complimentary webinar.

California is dealing with a challenge that is three-fold: reduce air quality pollutants, cut greenhouse gas emissions that drive climate change, and reduce petroleum consumption. Heavy-duty diesel truck transportation is a major contributor to the issues that comprise this challenge.

Despite progress in addressing this challenge, more aggressive and immediately deployable strategies are required to achieve California’s overlapping clean air and climate change objectives. Replacing or converting heavy-duty diesel engines with low NOx natural gas engines, fueled by renewable natural gas (RNG) produced in California, is one of these strategies. The potential for the combination of low NOx trucks fueled by RNG presents a compelling economic opportunity, and represents one of the few opportunities to further develop a sustainable and robust alternative, ultra-low carbon transportation fuel industry in California.

Clean-Cities: Johnson Space Center Featured on PBS Motor Week

Clean-Cities: Johnson Space Center was feature on PBS MotorWeek Success Stories.  Johnson Space Center has been using alternative feul and renewable energy in innovative ways.

Visitors can hop on a propane powered tram for a tour of the JSC campus facilities. Which includes two plug-in hybrid vehicled; a Ford C-MAX and Fusion. The center’s charging stations use power provided in part by this renewable energy system. It’s wind turbines and solar panels also help power a child care center.

“172 times, we’ve generated more power than what the building uses,” Jerry Rowlands said. “This is a grid connected system, so it just basically, the excess electricity goes out into the JSC grid.”

At JSC, EV science is also being harnessed for some “out of this world” work, such as a modular robotic vehicle. Electric motor driven vehicles have a number of advantages, such as reliability. There are fewer moving parts compared to other types of propulsion.

New Option Low NOx Propane engine gains certification

ROUSH CleanTech has developed the first propane autogas engine available in class 4-7 vehicles and Blue Bird Type C buses certified to the optional low nitrogen oxide (NOx) level .05 g/bhp-hr. These new Environmental Protection Agency- and California Air Resources Board-certified propane engines are 75 percent cleaner than the current emissions standard.

“Roush CleanTech’s low NOx engine is a great step forward for the propane industry,” said Tucker Perkins, president of the Propane Education & Research Council.

Roush CleanTech said it has begun installing the new low NOx engines in Ford commercial vehicles and Blue Bird Vision propane school buses with model year 2017 engines.

“Developing the lowest NOx propane engine sends a message that this fuel is comparable to other alternative fuels from a standpoint of emissions,” said Todd Mouw, vice president of sales and marketing for Roush CleanTech, which is based in Livonia, MI.

Roush said propane autogas costs about 40 percent less than gasoline and 50 percent than diesel.

Clean-Cities Featured on PBS’s Motor Week

H-GAC’s Clean-Cities Coalition stakeholders were feature on PBS’s “MotorWeek” Success Stories. Freedom CNG opened their first station in 2012 and today has four stations across the state. The company installed a compressed natural gas refueler right across the street from the Houston Distributing Company. The beverage wholesaler’s CNG fleet includes everything from light-duty vans to big rigs—all displacing over 700,000 gallons of diesel per year.

METRO rolled out 50 new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses in January 2016 in partnership with Freedom CNG. As part of the agreement, METRO buses using CNG must be able to refuel in the same time it takes to fill up with diesel. Since then METRO CNG buses have logged in the aggregate over 4.5 million miles on the streets of Houston, displacing over 1 million gallons of diesel fuel!
